I'm Josiah. I run Layer by Layer from a home studio in the UK, and I make buildable 3D wall art — pieces you put together with your hands, an afternoon at a time.

It started the way most things do: I was looking at a blank wall and I didn't want to put another print on it. Not because there's anything wrong with prints, but because I wanted something I'd actually look at every day, not something that would disappear into the wall after a week. I wanted depth. Real depth — the kind that catches the light and casts actual shadow.

So I started layering. One image, split into five to nine separate layers, each printed and cut to show a different part of the artwork. Stack them with foam pads between each layer and the piece builds outward from the wall. It stands off. It catches the light. It changes through the day as the sun moves. It's not a print and it's not a poster — it's dimensional, and you build it yourself.

And that's the part I didn't expect. The build is the point.

An afternoon with your hands

There's a specific kind of satisfaction in making something with your hands that you'll look at every day. The build takes an afternoon. You open the box, lay out the layers, and stack them — back to front, layer by layer, pressing each one into place. No scissors, no glue, no mess. Just the pieces, the pads, and your hands.

It's slow in the best way. An hour or two with the phone down, following the sequence, watching the depth build under your fingers. When the last layer goes on, you've made something — and it's on your wall by the evening.

The finished piece is the souvenir. The afternoon is the point.

Built together

The thing that surprised me most was how often people build with someone. A dad and a kid, each building the same piece side by side. A couple on a Sunday afternoon. Two friends who'd rather make something than watch something.

So we made the Build Together Set — two identical pieces in one box, one for each of you. Build side by side, hang side by side. It's the gift that gets built, hung, and talked about. Better than another dinner, and it actually lives on the wall afterwards.

Over half the people who buy from us are buying a gift. That makes sense to me. You're not giving someone a thing for their wall — you're giving them an afternoon and something to point at for years.

Built with artists

Every piece is a collaboration with a real artist. Not stock imagery, not anonymous designs, not a print-on-demand marketplace. A person with a name and a style and a share of every sale.

Artists get credited on every piece and paid a royalty on every sale — quarterly, on time, in their currency. They're involved in how their work gets translated into layers, from the first prototype to the final sign-off. When you build a piece, you're building one artist's work, engineered into something dimensional.

I think that matters. Not as a marketing line, but as a way of making things. Your work ships as a gift into someone's living room, not just into a collector's folder. You reach people who buy because they love someone, not just because they love art.

Drops, the Vault, and the Collection

The Collection is always there — a rotating set of pieces you can buy any time, organised by artist.

Once a month, we do a drop. Two or three artists, a limited window, then the piece is vaulted permanently. The Vault is where retired drops live — you can look, but you can't buy. You should have bought it when it was open. That's how editions work, and that's the whole point.

The drops are for the people who've already built one piece and want the next one. The collectors. The ones who follow specific artists and wait for the window to open. It's a quiet kind of anticipation — not panic, not hype, just the feeling that something good is coming and you'd rather not miss it.

What this is, and what it isn't

It isn't fast. It isn't done-for-you. It isn't a print you hang and forget. The slowness is the product — an afternoon spent making something with your hands, and a piece on your wall that you built and that catches the light every day after.

It isn't luxury and it isn't generic. It's a maker talking to another person. Every piece supports an artist. Every build is an afternoon you can point at.
